Choosing The Perfect Pet Parrot

Selecting The Perfect Parrot For You. Now that you have found a breeder or pet store to purchase your parrot from, the next step is to find that perfect parrot for you and your family.

Your level of experience, your budget, environment, and personality, as well as the time you have available to take care of the parrot are all key elements in choosing the right parrot.

Parrots have a long life expectancy ranging from 15 years for a cockatiel, to 70 to 100 years for larger parrots. Parrots also tend to form strong bonds with their owners. It can be very traumatic and stressful for them to be sold to another family. To avoid a situation like this developing, you need to be sure you are prepared to make a lifetime commitment before you purchase a parrot.

Remember that each parrot is an individual and has his/her own distinct and unique personality.

Your Pet Parrot takes you step by step through choosing the perfect parrot and teaches you all you need to know to keep your parrot happy and healthy.

The Best Parrot Species For The Novice

Before you buy a parrot read as much as you can about the various species of parrots and their distinct characteristics. Talk to several breeders, pet stores, and avian vets to find out as much as you can on particular species of birds.

Make sure the place of business you are purchasing your bird from will answer all of your questions and is willing to continue to answer your questions long after the sale is made.

If this is your first pet parrot, you may want to start out with a smaller species, such as a Cockatiel, Lovebird, Finch, Parakeet, or a Canary. Smaller parrots are less intimidating and easier to handle than the larger species.

If you are a first time parrot owner, it would be wise to buy a parrot that was hand-fed and well socialized. Parrots who have been hand-fed and handled as babies are normally tamer and friendlier than those raised by parents.

Some other considerations.

Your budget, your experiance handling parrots, the amount of time and space you have available as well as your own ability to tolerate noise all play a part in choosing the right parrot. For more advice on choosing the best bird read Your Pet Parrot-

This concise easy to read guide will take you step by step through choosing the perfect parrot as well as tips on how to avoid being fleeced by money hungry breeders and show you all you need to know in order to take care of your precious pet parrot.

Hi,

Thanks you for your comments on "Boisterous Bailey" and my experiences with him. He was truly special.

If at all possible, it is better to obtain a bird from a breeder who can provide evidence that your bird has had a health check. I've heard horror stories of people who purchased parrots from pet stores, only to become attached, then have their birds die because of undetected illness.

Also, a parrot's instincts will lead it to want to be with its human "flock" 24 hours a day. I would strongly suggest that those who work all day away from home do not get a parrot. This is unfair to the bird and can result in the bird developing behavioral problems.

Parrots are not like other pets. They have significant social and emotional needs that have to be met.

Those who are experienced with handling parrots and who don't mind "a labor of love" may choose to contact a rescue organization. Each year, untold numbers of parrots are brought in. Owners never took the time to educate themselves and the birds either became depressed, aggressive, or self-mutilated. These "problem" birds need loving homes, as well.

Owning a parrot can be an incredible experience but it is an undertaking where love is not enough.
